iPhone battery replacement
Safe cell removal, BMS handling so health reporting stays intact, and the calibration cycle that stops callbacks.
What you need
- Pentalobe P2, Phillips #000, Y000
- Nylon spudger (never metal)
- Pull-tab adhesive (supplied)
- IPA 99% and a blunt plastic card
- Fire-safe pouch
- BMS programmer (model dependent)
Step by step
- 01
Discharge below 25%
A low state of charge dramatically reduces thermal-event risk during removal.
- 02
Open and isolate
Heat the perimeter, open the device, then disconnect the battery connector before touching anything else.
- 03
Release the pull-tabs slowly
Pull at a shallow angle, steady and continuous, one tab at a time. If a tab snaps, flood IPA under the cell and wait.
Never pry a cell with metal. A punctured cell can vent — stop, bag it in the supplied fire-safe pouch and move it outside.
- 04
Transfer the BMS if the model requires it
Move the original chip across, or pair the new cell with a programmer, so health reporting stays intact.
- 05
Fit the new adhesive and cell
Dry-fit first, confirm the flex reaches its connector without tension, then peel and press for 10 seconds.
- 06
Reconnect, boot and verify
Check settings shows 100% health and that no service warning appears.
- 07
Run one calibration cycle
Drain to shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% to sync the coulomb counter.
What goes wrong, and the fix
"Unable to verify this battery"
The BMS is not paired to the logic board. Transfer the original chip or pair with a programmer.
Phone dies at 20–30%
Stale coulomb counter. One full 0–100% calibration cycle resolves it.
Phone won't power on
The battery flex is not fully seated. Reseat until it clicks, then force-restart on charge for 30 seconds.
Swelling months later
Usually a cell nicked during removal. Never refit a dented cell; only use nylon tools and the pull-tabs.
Questions techs ask
- Will the customer see a health warning?
- No. Certified cells keep health reporting intact; where a model needs pairing, transfer the chip or use a programmer.
- How long should the cell last?
- Cycle-tested to hold 80%+ capacity past 500 cycles — comfortably a full 24-month contract.
- How are cells shipped?
- Individually in fire-safe, anti-static pouches, UN38.3 certified, with a courier cleared for lithium transport.
